Breaking Prejudice - Home Button

Our Mission

We are dedicated to breaking the habit of prejudice and discrimination. We are working together to overcome these social issues by spreading awareness of the problem, establishing harmony between groups, and promoting acceptance of differences.

Our Purpose

History documents the repeated devaluation and exclusion of certain groups. Even today, while it may be less evident, discrimination affects people of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities. But if individuals and groups stand up and speak out, things can and will change. Our differences are inconsequential when it comes to being human. Therefore, they should not affect how we treat other individuals.

Acknowledgments

Our original website was designed by LaDeidre Robinson and implemented by Sam Blanchard and the students in the Anderson University Software Research Center. Our homepage was redesigned by Brad McKinney, ellojeo, inc., who also provided other updates. Support for this project was provided by the Association for Psychological Science.

Our Advocates

This project began as Virginia Ball Center Seminar, Breaking the Prejudice Habit (2013). It has since been expanded by Mary Kite's undergraduate and graduate students. These individuals have worked together to spread awareness of prejudice, establish harmony between groups, and promote acceptance of our differences.

Measures of Attitudes Toward Homosexuality

I developed two measures to assess attitudes toward homosexuality, the Homosexuality Attitude Scale and the Component Measure of Attitudes Toward Homosexuality. Either can be modified to assess attitudes toward gay men or lesbians by changing the statements within the measure.

Navigating Difficult Moments in Teaching Diversity and Social Justice

This co-edited book (Mary Kite, Kim Case, and Wendy Williams; forthcoming from APA Press) aims to provide a prepared and directly relevant source for some of the most common and challenging dilemmas for educators teaching about social justice.

Psychology of Prejudice and Discrimination

The fourth edition of our textbook, The Psychology of Prejudice and Discrimination, is available from Routledge (Taylor and Francis). Our textbook offers a comprehensive, research-based, review of the literature on prejudice and discrimination. The text covers a broad range of topics from race and ethnicity to gender, sexual orientation, ageism, lookism, and ability. We integrate theory and research with personal experiences and address the factors that shape prejudices.

Principles of Research in Behavioral Science

Intended for beginning graduate or advanced undergraduate students, our book, Principles of Research in Behavioral Science (3e), published by Routledge (Taylor and Francis) provides a comprehensive review of research methods used in psychology and related disciplines. Featuring examples from all fields of psychology, the book addresses laboratory and field research and covers topics that are often omitted in other texts including correlational and qualitative research and integrative literature reviews.
