Talking While Black

This podcast explores the backlash against discussing race and racism, especially in public schools.

Act One describes the experiences of Nevaeh, a bi-racial high school student, who was targeted in a Snapchat message chain by some of her peers. The text chat included a mock slave trade of students of color, including Nevaeh. Her reactions, and the reactions of members of her community to this event becoming public, are reviewed.

Act Two focuses on the movement to ban books related to race/ethnicity and gender identity. Jerry Craft is interviewed about the controversy in Katy, TX over his graphic novel, New Kid. The book is fiction, but includes events from the author's life, including microagressions he experienced as a student of color.
