Cultural Encounter Presentation
Students report about something they did that was outside of their comfort zone. This could be a) attending a meeting for a campus group that they have not attended before (GLBTQ Organization; Asian American Student Association); b) joining a weekly International Students conversation hour; c) attending a service for a religion that is unfamiliar to them; d) shopping at local stores/attempting to buy a car/applying for a loan, etc. dressed up or dressed down and comparing how they are treated; e) wearing clothing from a different culture in public and reporting how people react to them; f) evaluating how the local community looks to someone from another social group (e.g., ease of navigating for a person with a disability); or g) other creative ideas that give students insight into how the social world looks to members of other social groups. The experience is then related to the social psychological literature on prejudice and discrimination.
